Green Pact

Mordremoth's twisted children, born to consume and conquer.

The Mordrem are a faction of dragon minions created by the Elder Dragon Mordremoth, a plant-based entity that emerged from the Heart of Maguuma. Unlike a pre-existing nature-preserving faction, the Mordrem were born directly from Mordremoth's will and served as his army during the events of the Heart of Thorns expansion. Their sole purpose was to expand Mordremoth's territory and consume all life, not to preserve any natural balance.

Lore & Background

The Mordrem were not a corrupted version of a prior faction; they were created by Mordremoth as his dragon minions. During the Heart of Thorns expansion, the Pact—a multiracial military alliance—led an assault into the Heart of Maguuma to stop Mordremoth's spread. After Mordremoth's defeat, the Mordrem lost their unifying will and fragmented into isolated groups, no longer posing a coordinated threat. No independent 'Green Pact' faction existed before or after this conflict.

In Their Own Story

The wind whispered through the ancient canopy as a young treant stirred from its slumber. Its bark was scarred with old wounds, reminders of battles fought against steel and fire. It looked out over the ruins of a once-thriving human village, now swallowed by vines and moss. 'They came to take,' it thought, its voice a rustle of leaves. 'But the forest remembers.' With a slow, deliberate movement, it reached toward the sky, feeling the pulse of the earth beneath it. The Pact was broken, but the wild remained. And as long as there were roots to hold and branches to reach, the Green would endure.

Reader's Guide

The Green Pact is a faction composed largely of sentient plant life, including treants, elder trees, and other botanical entities. Their primary goal is the preservation of nature's balance, often through aggressive means if necessary. Historically aligned with Mordremoth, they viewed all non-plant life as a threat to Tyria's natural order. This led them into conflict with humans, Charr, Norn, and other races who sought to expand their territories. After Mordremoth's defeat, the Green Pact fragmented. Some members retreated into hiding, while others attempted to rebuild their forces without the dragon's influence. Key figures include various unnamed treants and elder trees who serve as local leaders within specific regions of Tyria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the Green Pact?

The Green Pact is an ancient, independent faction composed primarily of plant-based lifeforms dedicated to preserving Tyria's natural balance. They view themselves as guardians who must reclaim land lost to civilization, often opposing human and Charr expansion.

What powers or roles do they hold?

As extensions of the wilds, Pact members possess abilities tied to nature, allowing them to manipulate flora and defend their territory against intruders. Their primary role is to act as a spiritual barrier preventing unchecked development from destroying the ecosystem.

How does their story conclude in the main timeline?

The Green Pact's narrative arc shifts dramatically after the defeat of Mordremoth, who had corrupted many of its members into hostile forces known as the Mordrem. Although significantly diminished by this conflict, the faction remains active and continues to protect the Heart of Maguuma.

Why are they considered important in Guild Wars 2 lore?

They serve as a critical narrative force representing the cost of expansion and the resilience of nature against industrialization. Their existence challenges players and other factions to consider the ethical implications of conquering wild lands for progress.

Are they allies or enemies to the player?

The Green Pact is generally hostile toward outsiders who threaten the forest, though their stance can vary depending on whether the intruder respects nature's balance. Players often encounter them as obstacles in the Heart of Maguuma rather than reliable allies.
